How To: Spicing Up a Simple Shift

A black shift dress is a must in every woman's closet. This little number can be dressed up or down and is appropriate in professional and social environments. Normally I pair mine with a grey blazer and all black accessories to keep it super corporate but every once in awhile it's fun to switch it up. Read on to see my step-by-step example of how to transform your dress from Neutral Nancy to Stylin' Sheila.

Step 1: Belt It! I chose an elastic belt in the same color as my dress. The belt shouldn't distract from your ensemble, it' should enhance it by cinching your waist and giving you a slight hourglass shape.

Step 2: Add some sparkle! A statement necklace goes perfectly against a LBD, especially when it has a high neckline. Dainty jewelry won't pop as much against the dark hue so pick a necklace with some color... bonus points if it's multi-colored!

Step 3: Pop of color! Since this outfit was put together for a workday, I chose a blazer that would make a huge impact. The neon pink of this shawl collar suit jacket is the perfect contrast against the black and correlates perfectly with my necklace.

Blazer: Express (on sale!) Shift Dress: Target (super old, identical in blue, similar, love this long sleeve option) Heels: #96 Calvin Klein via DSW (old, similar) Necklace: Laila Rowe (recent, love this) Bangle: Nordstrom Rack Watch: Michael Kors Purse: B Makowsky via TJ Maxx (old)

A few other ways to jazz up your simple shift dress...
* Paint your nails in a contrasting color - I love how my blue fingernails and toes provide a fun little surprise (love this color - only $2.80!)
* Swap out your classic black pumps for something metallic and strappy
* Go color-overload and pick a purse in the same color family as your necklace and/or blazer
